The Legacy of Leonard Ravenhill |
Vol. I No. 10 |
Oct. 16, 2006 |
| |
The last of his generation of prophets from England, Leonard Ravenhill was a tireless voice to the church of the need for repentance and revival. Listening to his insightful messages on Scripture, applied to today, we can easily see his frustration with the increasing assimilation of the church into secular humanistic culture.
In 1988, while doing a school with Youth With a Mission, I was privileged to hear Leonard during his last three months of weekly ministry at Last Days Ministries in Texas. Years later, I discover that audios and videos from these days have been posted on the internet. I highly recommend you take the time to download a few of his messages and listen prayerfully. He generally begins in a very nondescript way, but slowly builds to some very pointed thoughts.
For some excellent comments on Leonard and his influence, by David Bercot, go to www.scrollpublishing.com/store/Ravenhill.html.
For a large number of his messages, and some videos, go to www.ravenhill.org/mp3.htm.

Quick Picks for Your Planning
Each week WorshipToonz posts a new QuickPicks Worship List, one of the ways we try to help you in your worship music planning. Below is our current list, from Zion Christian Church in Troy, MI. See other lists for download on this page at WorshipToonz.
List of the Week, October 15, 2006
For your convenience,
you can download this list here. |
Just came across a secular site that looks interesting—focused on singing technique and playing guitar and piano. Looks like there is some worthwhile material on playmusicsing.com, and a free singing mini-course. Of course, if you click in far enough, you'll eventually get to ads for purchased materials, but even here there is worthwhile information.
If you feel there are gaps in your singing or playing ability, you may find some useful info. Information that you or I may consider obvious may not be so obvious to another. Sometimes it's the material we think that everyone already know that is the missing link for some.

I. PRIESTLY MINISTRY
C. Purpose of the Priesthood
In the following scriptures, we see what the PURPOSE of the priesthood is:
“But the priests the Levites…they shall come near to me to minister unto me …” Ezekiel 44:15
“…that he (Aaron) may minister unto me in the priest’s office.”
Exodus 28:3
God uses the phrase “minister unto me” four times in Exodus 28 to describe the PURPOSE of the priesthood. One of the key ways they fulfilled this purpose was through offering sacrifice.
In the New Testament:
“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” I Peter 2:5
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people that
should SHOW FORTH (demonstrate) the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness
into his marvelous light.”
I Peter 2:9
“By (through) him, therefore, let us offer the SACRIFICE OF PRAISE TO GOD (our ministry)
continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” Hebrews 13:15
“Therefore , I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship .” Romans 12:1 NIV
Our primary responsibility as New Testament priests (just as in the Old Testament) is to minister to the Lord! The Old Testament priests fulfilled this purpose through offering sacrifice. Through Jesus, the Old Testament system of sacrifice was abolished. Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, became the perfect and final sacrifice.
SACRIFICE
Zebach - Hebrew for sacrifice. Means the slaying of flesh. Jesus Christ did it once and for all for us!
Old Testament - brought by individual: (animal) confession to atone for sin.
New Testament - brought by individual: (spiritual sacrifice) confession of the greatness of the one who atoned for our sin.
NOW OUR SACRIFICES ARE SPIRITUAL, OFFERING PURE WORSHIP, LIVING AS TRUE WORSHIPERS! WHEN WE LIFT OUR VOICES AND HANDS TO THE ORD AND OFFER THE
SACRIFICE OF PRAISE, WE FUNCTION AS PRIESTS, MINISTERING TO THE LORD!
D. Three Locations of Ministry
The Tabernacle of Moses was subdivided into three areas:
- The Outer Court, where the Brazen Altar and the Brazen Laver were.
- The Holy Place, where the Golden Candlestick, Table of Shewbread, and the Altar of Incense were.
- The Holy of Holies, divided off by the VEIL, where the Ark of the Covenant was.
These areas speak to us of our ministry as priests. First and primary is the Holy of Holies in which we see our ministry to the Lord. Secondly, the Holy Place, our ministry to our brothers and sisters in the HOUSE OF GOD. Thirdly, the Outer Court, our ministry to those who have not yet RECEIVED THE LORD; they may have come to the house of God, or be outside.
Although ALL of these aspects of ministry are important in our ministry as priests, our PRIMARY, FIRST responsibility is in ministry to the Lord; all of our other ministry will flow out of our ministry/relationship to the Lord. Even though the Old Testament priests were busy with serving the people they had to be separated to Him and keep this priority that they might be effective. |
